The municipality is your primary authority
Civil marriages are conducted through municipal authorities. The Cyprus Ministry of Interior directs couples to the relevant municipal process and explains how certified copies are obtained. Begin with the official Ministry of Interior civil-marriage page, then contact the exact municipality where the ceremony will be registered.
Documents commonly requested
The current government guidance for foreign nationals lists a passport, a recent certificate of family or civil status and a birth-certificate copy among the common documents. Divorced applicants may need the final divorce decree; widowed applicants may need the former spouse’s death certificate. Names, spellings and dates should agree across every document.
Translations and authentication
Public documents may need an official Greek or English translation. Depending on the issuing country, an apostille or another authentication route may also be required. EU rules can remove the apostille requirement for certain public documents, but that does not make every document or translation automatically acceptable. Ask the municipality to confirm each document individually.
Notice and special procedures
Cyprus provides a normal notice route and a faster special-licence route when the statutory conditions are met. Government guidance currently lists indicative fees for both, but fees can change and venues sometimes quote separate ceremony charges. Request the municipal fee schedule and appointment requirements directly before paying.
Witnesses and the certificate
A civil ceremony normally requires two witnesses with suitable identification. After the ceremony, the couple, witnesses and Marriage Officer sign the certificates. Ask whether additional certified copies are advisable for registration or administrative use in your home country.
A safer document workflow
Send clear scans to the municipality before arranging apostilles, sworn translations or travel. Ask for written confirmation of document type, issue-date limit, name format, certification, translation and originals required. Carry originals and secure copies separately when travelling.
Information is editorial and intended for planning. Legal requirements, fees, availability and supplier terms can change; verify them directly with the relevant municipality, venue or supplier before relying on them.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need birth certificates to marry in Cyprus?
They are commonly requested, but the exact format and certification depend on the municipality and your circumstances. Obtain written confirmation before ordering copies.
Do Cyprus wedding documents need an apostille?
Some foreign documents do; certain EU public documents may be exempt. The answer depends on the issuing country and document, so confirm it with the municipality.
Can we marry in Cyprus if one of us is divorced?
Generally yes, but the final divorce documentation must satisfy the Marriage Officer. Ask which decree, finality wording, translation and authentication are required.
